Research Areas

  • The study of structural and phase transformations under extreme external effects in metallic materials (strong plastic deformation, high pressure, temperature, radiation, corrosive environments).
  • The study of structure, physico-mechanical properties and the development of new steels with improved functional characteristics (strength, shape memory, wear resistance, ductility, creep resistance, fatigue resistance, radiation resistance, resistance to stress corrosion cracking).
  • The creation of nanocrystalline alloys due to severe plastic deformation, cyclic martensitic transformations, irradiation with high-energy particles, crystallization of metallic glasses.
  • Ordering development of high-strength complex-alloyed alloys based on noble metals (Al-Cu, Pd-Cu, etc.) having high contact resistance and durability.
  • The creation of alloys with adjustable coefficient of linear expansion.

The most significant results obtained in the laboratory

  1. The conditions for creation of nanocrystalline structure alloys due to severe plastic deformation, cyclic martensitic transformations, and crystallization of amorphous metallic glasses, high-energy particle irradiation (Pavlov V.A., Noskova N.I., Sagaradze V.V., Ketova V.P., Kabanova I.G., Sorokin I.P., Shabashov V.A., Alyabyev V.M., Lapin S.S., Antonova O.V., Frizen E.N., Volkova E.G., Lapina T.M., etc.).
  2. Elucidated the mechanisms of ordering of alloys based on noble metals (Syutkina V.I., Zemtsova N.D., Volkov A.Yu., Pereturina I.A., Syutkin N.N.).
  3. As a result of studying the mechanisms of plastic deformation detected anomalous low-temperature (77-300K) deformation and dissolution of various intermetallic compounds, carbides, nitrides and oxides in the alloys during interaction of dislocations with particles. The possibility is shown of the concentration stratification of FCC solid solutions upon severe cold deformation, explained by the migration of point defects of deformation origin in the drains - grain boundaries (Sagaradze, V. Shabashov V.A., Mukoseev A.G., Deryagin A.I., Zavalishin V.A., Kuznetsov A.R., Starikov S.A., Vil’danova N.F., Pecherkina N.L., Morozov S.T., Litvinov A.V., Kozlov K.A., Zamatovsky A.E.).
  4. The proposed model magnetic dispersion hardening invars, allowing to estimate the temperature coefficient of hardening alloys when cooled below TC in view of emerging elastic strains around small regions of magnetic inhomogeneities (Starchenko E.I., Sagaradze V.V.).
  5. Based on the study of mechanism of phase transformations under external influences created new ways of processing and formulations of steels and alloys with improved physical and mechanical properties:
  • Radiation-resistant stainless steel, with high resistance to vacancy swelling for membranes of fuel elements and other reactor components and fission;
  • Various non-ferromagnetic high strength austenitic steel with high wear resistance, ductility, fatigue strength and resistance to stress corrosion cracking, for energy machines and non-ferromagnetic housings;
  • Ordering high-strength complex-alloyed alloys based on noble metals (Au-Cu, Pd-Cu, etc.), which has a high contact resistance, for control systems and navigation devices;
  • Alloys with adjustable within wide limits coefficient of linear expansion;
  • High-tech ferromagnetic material with rectangular hysteresis loop for high-speed hysteresis engines;
  • Heat-resistant alloys with a reduced content of platinum for glass melting vessels;
  • High-strength dispersion-hardening steels with a controlled shape memory effect for sealing of pipes of oil wells and connecting pipelines;
  • Technology gas-phase aluminizing to improve heat resistance of the metal blocks-media converters exhaust emissions of vehicles;
  • Technology for producing dispersion-strengthened with oxides of RPV steels of new generation.

Almost all new technologies and formulations obtained patents and certificates of authorship for inventions (V.A. Pavlov, V.V. Sagaradze, V.I. Syutkina, V.I. Shalaev, V.M. Alyabyev, V.N.
